It inhabits dense forest and is threatened by logging, hunting, and introduced predators. Taxonomy has shifted over time among rail genera such as Gallirallus, Nesoclopeus, and Hypotaenidia. Conservation attention focuses on safeguarding intact forest and controlling invasive mammals.
