Useful to know

This elusive understory babbler is confined to the hills of far Northeast India, mainly in northeast Assam and southeast Arunachal Pradesh. It keeps to dense thickets and bamboo, making it easier to hear than to see. Habitat loss from forest clearing and fragmentation poses the main threat. Its presence often indicates intact, humid hill forest with rich undergrowth.

Social Behavior

Usually found in pairs or small family parties, and sometimes joins mixed-species flocks in the understory. It forages quietly within dense cover, often keeping within a meter or two of the ground. Nests are placed low in thick vegetation, with breeding presumed during the spring–summer rains.

Migratory Pattern

Song Description

A soft, melodious series of whistles and piping notes delivered from cover, often in brief phrases. Calls include thin chips and scolding churrs used to maintain contact within pairs or small groups.

Identification

Leg Colorpinkish-flesh
Eye Colordark brown

Plumage

Warm brown to olive-brown upperparts with paler, buffy underparts and a conspicuous clean white throat that contrasts with the surrounding plumage. Fine, soft-textured feathers give a smooth appearance, with minimal streaking. Subtle pale supercilium and slightly duskier face.

Feeding Habits

Diet

Primarily feeds on small arthropods such as beetles, ants, caterpillars, and spiders gleaned from leaves, twigs, and bamboo culms. It may occasionally take small berries or seeds, especially when insect prey is scarce. Foraging is deliberate, with frequent pauses to probe and pick within leaf litter and tangled stems.

Preferred Environment

Feeds in dense understory of semi-evergreen and evergreen hill forests, bamboo thickets, and shrubby ravines. Often works along streamside tangles and forest edges where insect activity is high.
