Typical Environment
Found in tropical moist lowland and foothill forests, including primary and well-vegetated secondary growth. It frequents shaded forest interior, edges, and riparian corridors, where it hunts from low to mid-story perches. The species can persist in selectively logged habitat if sufficient understory structure remains, but it is most numerous in mature forest. It often accompanies mixed flocks through dense tangles and along streams.

The Mindanao blue fantail is a small, restless flycatcher of the understory that frequently fans and flicks its tail while foraging. It is confined to the southern Philippines, occurring on Mindanao and nearby Basilan, and was formerly lumped with the Visayan blue fantail before being split based on differences in plumage and vocalizations. It favors moist lowland and foothill forests, often joining mixed-species flocks along shaded trails and streams.
