Typical Environment

Confirmed only from New Providence Island. It likely used habitats favored by emerald hummingbirds such as dry to semi-humid scrub, coastal thickets, and pine rocklands with abundant flowering shrubs. Edges of coppice forest and gardens with nectar sources would also have provided foraging opportunities. Because it is known from a single historical specimen, exact habitat use and range limits remain uncertain.

Useful to know

Brace's emerald is an extinct hummingbird known from a single specimen collected on New Providence in the Bahamas. It was likely closely related to the Cuban emerald but was distinct enough to be described as its own species. Its disappearance probably followed rapid habitat alteration on the island in the late 19th century. Little is known about its ecology beyond what is inferred from related emerald hummingbirds.
