The Lompobattang leaf warbler is a species of Old World warbler in the family Phylloscopidae. It is found only in Sulawesi Island, Indonesia. The Sulawesi leaf warbler was formerly considered conspecific with the Lompobattang leaf warbler and both were grouped under the name P. sarasinorum, but more recent analyses indicate that it is a distinct species.
Region
Sulawesi (South Sulawesi), Indonesia
Typical Environment
Occurs on and around Mount Lompobattang in montane and submontane evergreen forests. It frequents mossy forest, forest edges, and ridgelines where dense foliage offers abundant foraging sites. Birds forage from the understory to mid-canopy, often moving rapidly among tangles and leaf clusters. It tolerates lightly disturbed habitats but is tied to forested environments and does not typically use open areas. Range is very localized compared with the wider-ranging Sulawesi leaf warbler.
Altitude Range
1000–2800 m
Climate Zone
Highland
Ease of Keeping
Beginner friendly: 1/5
A small, active Phylloscopus warbler restricted to the highlands around Mount Lompobattang in South Sulawesi, Indonesia. It was long treated as part of the Sulawesi leaf warbler complex (then under P. sarasinorum) but has been split based on vocal, genetic, and subtle morphological differences. It often joins mixed-species flocks and can be surprisingly elusive despite its frequent, high-pitched calls.
Temperament
active and somewhat skulking
Flight Pattern
short rapid wingbeats
Social Behavior
Usually seen singly or in pairs, joining mixed-species flocks outside the breeding season. During breeding, pairs defend small territories and remain low to mid-levels in dense vegetation. Nests are typically domed or cup-like structures placed low in shrubs or on banks, with both parents attending the young.
Migratory Pattern
Resident
Song Description
Song is a series of thin, high-pitched trills and seee notes delivered in quick, repetitive phrases. Calls include sharp, sibilant chips that carry through montane forest. Vocalizations are a key field character separating it from related Sulawesi taxa.
