Black-collared bulbul

Wikipedia

The black-collared bulbul, or black-collared greenbul, is a species of songbird in the bulbul family, Pycnonotidae. It is monotypic within the genus Neolestes. For many years, some authorities considered the genus to belong to the bushshrike or shrike families due to shape and plumage similarities until a review of molecular genetic relationships in 1999 confirmed the behavioral and morphological affinities to Pycnonotidae. The black-collared bulbul is found in equatorial Africa in its natural habitat of dry savanna.

Distribution

Region

Equatorial Africa

Typical Environment

Occurs patchily across south-central and equatorial Africa, including dry savannas and open woodlands such as miombo and Brachystegia-dominated habitats. Favors shrublands, woodland edges, riparian thickets, and secondary growth where dense cover alternates with open foraging spaces. Often local but can be fairly common where suitable thicket and woodland mosaics persist. Tolerates lightly disturbed habitats and ecotones near clearings and tracks.

Useful to know

The black-collared bulbul is monotypic in the genus Neolestes and was historically misclassified as a bushshrike due to its shrike-like shape and plumage. Molecular and behavioral evidence confirmed its placement within the bulbul family (Pycnonotidae). It is a discreet, foliage-loving bird that often remains low in thickets. Its distinctive black collar and white throat make it unusually easy to identify among greenbuls.
