The Togian white-eye is a species of bird in the family Zosteropidae.
Region
Sulawesi, Indonesia
Typical Environment
Occurs only on the Togian Islands in the Gulf of Tomini off central Sulawesi. It inhabits lowland tropical forests, forest edges, and secondary growth, and may visit village gardens with flowering shrubs. The species forages from the understory to the mid- and upper canopy, often moving rapidly through foliage. It is closely associated with intact and lightly disturbed evergreen habitats.
Altitude Range
Sea level to 400 m
Climate Zone
Tropical
Ease of Keeping
Beginner friendly: 1/5
The Togian white-eye is a recently described species (2008) in the white-eye family Zosteropidae, restricted to Indonesia’s Togian Islands. Like many white-eyes, it forages actively in small flocks and often joins mixed-species parties. Its tiny range makes it vulnerable to habitat loss and degradation.
Temperament
social and active
Flight Pattern
short rapid wingbeats
Social Behavior
Usually found in small, chattering groups and frequently joins mixed-species foraging flocks. Pairs form during the breeding season and likely maintain small territories around nest sites. Nests are typically neat cups placed in shrubs or small trees, with cooperative defense against intruders.
Migratory Pattern
Resident
Song Description
A series of thin, high-pitched twitters and soft warbles delivered rapidly. Contact calls are sharp, brief chips used to keep flock cohesion while foraging.
Plumage
Olive-green upperparts with cleaner whitish to pale gray underparts and a yellow-washed throat and vent. Feathers are sleek and close-fitting, giving a smooth appearance typical of white-eyes.
Diet
Takes small insects and other arthropods gleaned from leaves and twigs. Also consumes soft fruits and occasionally nectar from flowering plants. Foraging is agile and continuous, with frequent hovering and short sallying to pick prey. It often benefits from mixed flocks that stir up insects.
Preferred Environment
Feeds in forest edges, secondary vegetation, and semi-open woodland with flowering shrubs and fruiting trees. Most foraging occurs in the mid- to upper canopy but it will descend to lower levels in edge habitats and gardens.
