Sharpe's rosefinch is a species of finch in the family Fringillidae. It is found in central China and far northern Myanmar. Its natural habitat is subtropical or tropical high-altitude shrubland. It was formerly considered to be a subspecies of the spot-winged rosefinch.

Typical Environment

Occupies high-altitude shrublands, especially rhododendron, juniper, and dwarf bamboo thickets near and above the treeline. Uses edges of coniferous forest, alpine meadows, and scrubby slopes with scattered boulders. In winter it may descend to slightly lower elevations, frequenting brushy valleys and forest margins. Prefers dense cover for foraging and nesting but will venture into more open patches when feeding.

Sharpe's rosefinch is a high-montane finch of central China extending into far northern Myanmar, favoring rhododendron and juniper scrub above the treeline. It was formerly treated as a subspecies of the spot-winged rosefinch but is now recognized as a distinct species. Males show rich rosy tones while females are streaky and better camouflaged among shrubs. It often makes short altitudinal movements, forming small flocks outside the breeding season.

Social Behavior

Breeds in pairs, nesting low in dense shrubbery; the nest is a compact cup of twigs and grasses. Outside the breeding season it gathers in small, loose flocks that move through alpine scrub. Courtship includes soft twittering and short chases among shrubs.
