Typical Environment

Occurs locally in temperate montane forests with dense undergrowth, especially mixed conifer–broadleaf stands, rhododendron thickets, and bamboo understory. Prefers shaded gullies, streamside shrubbery, and forest edges where leaf-litter and low foliage provide foraging cover. Breeding territories are typically on steep, forested slopes with ample shrub cover. Non-breeding distribution is poorly documented but likely involves movement to lower elevations or more southerly thickets with similar dense cover.

It breeds in dense montane thickets and is seldom seen in the open, often betraying its presence only by voice. The species is poorly known and has a small, fragmented range, making it vulnerable to forestry and habitat degradation.
