The blue-fronted amazon, also called the blue-fronted parrot, the turquoise-fronted amazon and the turquoise-fronted parrot, is a South American species of amazon parrot and one of the most common amazon parrots kept in captivity as a pet or companion parrot. Its common name is derived from the distinctive blue/turquoise marking on its head just above its beak.

Typical Environment

Occurs in Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay, and northern Argentina, inhabiting woodlands, gallery forests, savannas with scattered trees, and palm groves. It also uses forest edges and riparian corridors and frequently ventures into agricultural lands and urban parks. Birds form foraging flocks and can be conspicuous around fruiting trees. They roost communally and may move locally following food availability.

Useful to know

One of the most commonly kept Amazon parrots, it is known for loud vocalizations and strong mimicry ability, but also for high social and enrichment needs. Two main subspecies differ in the extent of yellow on the face and red on the wing bend. Wild populations are locally common, though trapping and habitat loss have caused declines in parts of its range.

Social Behavior

Typically seen in pairs or small to medium flocks, especially at roosts and feeding sites. Forms long-term pair bonds and nests in tree cavities. Both parents tend the young, and family groups may remain together after fledging.
