Black-crowned barwing

Wikipedia

The black-crowned barwing is a non-migratory bird from Indochina in the family Leiothrichidae. Typical Environment

Occurs in evergreen and semi-evergreen montane forests with dense understory, especially along ridges and steep slopes. It favors thickets of bamboo, rhododendron, and vine tangles, and also uses forest edges and lightly disturbed secondary growth adjoining primary forest. Birds typically remain within a few meters of the ground, moving through dense cover. It sometimes joins mixed-species flocks, especially in the non-breeding season.

Useful to know

This recently described barwing is confined to the Central Annamite highlands of Vietnam and adjacent Laos, where it keeps to dense montane forest. Its name honors the Xo Dang (Sodang) people living near Mount Ngoc Linh, the area where it was first found. Habitat loss and fragmentation have made it a conservation priority, and it is best detected by its thin, high-pitched calls rather than by sight.
